Children's Picture Book Illustrator

MEET EMILY DAY
I am an aspiring children's book illustrator and writer who has an interest in illustrating social issues that aren't usually covered in the industry. I want to produce books that educate young children on important issues in a way that they will understand. I believe it's important that children are introduced to this at a young age as this is when the brain is developing and when they start to inform their own opinions. I also have an interest in history specifically how things change over time stemming from my childhood and visits to museums, hearing my dad's experiences from his time in the army. Most of my work is created digitally but I do work traditionally as well. This often depends on what I feel will best represent the subject matter and how it communicates the context.
More Than Just Homeless (Children's Picture Book)
This project explores homelessness from the perspective of a soup kitchen volunteer, it’s a story that reminds the reader to be patient with people as you never know what you will uncover. The book is aimed at 10-year-olds. My intention with the book was to make everyone feel included so one of the characters hasn’t been given a gender or ethnicity.
Our Planet
This project consists of two triptychs that were made to show how animals are being affected through human actions. I have concentrated on sea turtles whose numbers are declining due to many threats, the one I have explored is fishing gear and then African elephants which are declining due to food loss caused by drought. The audience I designed these for were children.
Berlin: A quaranzine (collaboration)
A zine created by myself and eight other illustrators about not being able to go on our trip to Berlin in March 2020 due to the pandemic. The zine shows places we wanted to go to and things we wanted to try alongside a poem written by one of the illustrators.
